New Hampshire is quickly being swept up in the wave of bed bug infestations washing across the country over the past few years. While bed bugs have been reported all throughout the state, the area covered by Portsmouth, Derry, Salem, and other nearby communities has become one of two major hot spots for bed bug activity in New Hampshire (the other being the Manchester-Nashua area). In fact, based on our own research, New Hampshire has the third highest rate of bed bug reports per capita, behind only New York and Colorado. But chances are, that’s a statistic that you won’t see showing up in the tourism literature anytime soon.

Portsmouth Bed Bugs in the News

“Bed bugs found in Keefe House unit” – Seacoastonline.com, 9 May 2015. Today, the president of a property management company admitted that workers had discovered bed bugs infesting a residential unit in a housing complex for elderly and disabled persons in Downtown Portsmouth. He was quick to point out that bed bugs had only been found in a single unit in the building, and that this is one of only 8 to 10 cases of bed bug infestation that the company has run into in the last decade. At the time the article was published, treatment of the infested apartment had already commenced.

“Problems persist at Brewster Street rooming house” – Seacoastonline.com, 17 February 2015. At a Portsmouth city council meeting on February 17th, an attorney for the city informed council members that a host of new problems had cropped up at a notorious rooming house on Brewster Street. According to City Attorney Robert Sullivan, bed bugs are currently infesting all 34 of the residential units that comprise the rooming house. A year previously, the council nearly voted against extending the operating permit for the rooming house due to previous safety issues and code violations, but had chosen to not interrupt operation due to concerns for those currently living in the building.

“New N.H. law targets the itchy problem of bed bug infestations” – Concord Monitor, 25 August 2013. Leave it to bed bugs to get Republican and Democratic legislators to agree on something. After years of fielding innumerable complaints from renters about bed bug infestations that landlords allowed to continue untreated, the state government finally did something about it, passing a bill designed to force landlords to promptly address bed bug outbreaks. Under the new law, once a renter reports a bed bug sighting, landlords have 7 days to investigate the report, and take “reasonable measures” to address the issue. If they fail to do so, tenants can take them to court. Previously, there had been no specific state guidelines for what landlords were required to do about bed bugs, and how long they had to solve the problem. The new law is set to take effect January 1st, 2014.
