“Maui family sues Castle Resorts over bed bugs at Paki Maui in Kaanapali” – Pacific Business News, 31 October 2014. A Hana resident filed suit in the Honolulu 1st Circuit Court against the owners of a Maui hotel, alleging that the owners had failed to act appropriately to control a bed bug outbreak in the rooms. According to the plaintiff, she and her mother were staying at the hotel when they discovered they had been bitten by bed bugs. Despite their complaints to hotel staff, no one acted to correct the issue until four days later. The plaintiffs are suing for general and special damages, as well attorney’s fees.

“Colorado couple sues Hilton Hawaiian Village over bedbug dispute” – Pacific Business News, 19 September 2014. Vacationers at a high-end hotel resort in Honolulu filed a lawsuit against the hotel’s owners, claiming that they were not warned about a bed bug infestation that the hotel was experiencing. The couple stated that after they returned home from a week-long stay, they discovered that they had brought the bed bugs with them, and had to hire a bed bug pest control specialist to exterminate the unwanted passengers.

“Bed bugs infest Honolulu homeless shelter” – Hawaii News Now KHNL/KGMB, 1 July 2014. Some of the more than 150 people who stayed at homeless shelter in Honolulu reported that they had suffered severe bed bug bites. One witness reported seeing four or five bed bugs every night, and provided photos of dozens of bed bug bites covering her son’s legs and arms. The article mentioned that the Oahu Community Correctional Center had also recently experienced a bed bug infestation.

“Paramedics encountering more bed bugs” – KITV 4 News, 4 April 2014. Paramedics in the Honolulu area have reported seeing bed bugs in many of the city’s ambulances. The problem has become so bad that the Honolulu City Council has spent more than $17,000 decontaminating bed bug infested ambulances. The council estimates that the cost for the next fiscal year will rise to more than $25,000.
