He went on to say that he understands the health risks of DDT and why it was banned, but believes that the scale of the city’s inundation with bed bugs necessitates a drastic response. City documents indicate that Hamilton has experienced a 600 per cent increase in reports of bed bugs since 2006.

“Woman, 99, fends off bedbugs in TCHC building” – Metro, 8 February 2014. In an interview with Torstar News Services, a 99 year old resident of a TCHC apartment recounted her hellish experiences with bed bugs, and the disconcerting manner in which the extermination was handled. After experiencing bites across much of her body, especially on her shoulders, the exterminators dispatched to subdue the bedbugs told the resident that she was responsible for moving her furniture out of the apartment, as well as scrubbing it down.
